Social Media or Computers?
I spoke to a woman recently who said she didn’t think it was a fad any more. I thought she was talking about social media, but she was talking about computers!
I was expecting her to say social media, because that’s what I hear most often. It’s a fad. It will go away. Why should I waste my time?
To me these questions seem just as crazy.
Social Media Is A New Way Of Communicating
Social media isn’t a passing fad. I’ll admit it will change and evolve just like the telephone or the computer, but it is a new way of communicating.
It’s not just something your kids are using. Literally billions (yes I said billions) of people all over the world are using hundreds of social sites to connect and share with others.
Here are some great stats from Craig Smith of Digital Marketing Ramblings that show the number of users (some estimated through news sources) of sites around the world. With over 100 sites listed, there are only 2 under 1 million users.
Time To Get Started
As you think about your plans for 2013; personally, professionally, or organizationally, it’s time to recognize social. Here are some things to think about:
- Can I be found on social? If so, what does my presence look like?
- Have I connected the dots between my social networks, especially if I’m in business?
- If I’m just getting started, what platform should I start with?
Pick one or two platforms and focus on them. Learn them. Become part of the community. Find someone to buddy up with.
Yes this will take a little time. Yes it will feel uncomfortable. Yes there is a learning curve.
You can stretch yourself to learn more or you can sit back and call this a fad, like my friend has done about computers. It’s your choice.
