Start Today

Life never calms down long enough for us to wait until tomorrow to start living the lives we deserve. ~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

Where Has Time Gone?

Here we are at the end of January.  Last week I found myself wondering where the month went. It seems like yesterday we were ringing in the new year.  Suddenly spring is in reaching distance.

Are you like me, telling yourself you will start that new book, lose weight, learn to paint, next week, next month, this summer?

Start Today

Well my friends, it is time to start today.  This is that moment you promised yourself months ago to start something you’ve always wanted.  Pushing it off another week is telling yourself you aren’t worth it…and you are.

There will always be something more important on the front burner, but you don’t want to get to an age where you regret the things you never did.  If the year is moving so quickly, you must take advantage of this moment right now to begin the life you deserve.

Take The First Step

Spend a few quiet moments this week imaging such a life. Imagine what it is filled with. I love to journal.  If you do to, write all those things down.  Now look at your schedule and begin planning in the first step.  If you want to learn to paint, maybe this week you go to the library and get a book on painting or sign up for a class or even go and buy the paints. Then plan your next step. It doesn’t have to be big to move you in the right direction.

Soon you will notice that time expands to meet your needs. I promise.

You Can’t Get Tulips From Zucchini Seeds

Snowy Tulips

We’ve had a wonderful end to winter and early spring.  Then it snowed, April 4th.  My early-sprouting tulips were covered with several inches of snow.  Yuck!

As we week progressed, we went from snow to rain and finally to sunshine.  You could feel the tulips shaking off the chill and re-positioning themselves to soak up the warmth of the spring sunshine.

Would a zucchini have the same resistance?  I venture to guess if you planted zucchini seeds in the fall as you do tulip bulbs, you would not be seeing zucchini sprouts in April.  Even if by some strange chance they did sprout, 4 inches of snow would seal their demise.

Right Season Right Plant

All of this seems common sense, but how many seeds of ideas do we sow at the wrong time.  How many times have we wished for something that we actually weren’t prepared to achieve.  I think about my own business and although several years ago I would love to have the success I enjoy today, truth is I wouldn’t have been able to handle it.

As you stretch yourself this spring, think about the seeds you want to sow.  In the non-gardening world these would be goals, projects, etc.  Are they realistic for this time in your career or in your business?  Are you prepared to endure the potential snow storm that may befall them.

When you plant the seed at the right time, provide it with what it requires and nurture it, you are blessed with a fruitful harvest.  When you plant to early, you only experience frustration, exhaustion and regret.

Will It Be Tulips or Zucchini This Week

This week review your goals from the beginning of the year.  Visualize yourself achieving the goal today.  What does it look like?  How does it feel?  Do you have the systems in place to make things run smoothly?  Do you have the time and energy to sustain them?

Use this time to revise your goals if needed.  Perhaps you scale back to make them more realistic.  Perhaps you ramp them up because you know you can do even more.  Whatever your situation, it is important to review our goals in real time to ensure we have what it takes to not only enjoy the tulips now but reap the zucchini later this summer.

Possibilities – Letting Life Unfold

 Possibilities in the New Year

Here we are on the brink of another year.  I love to take this week and not just reflect on the previous year, but also explore the possibilities of the next.

Notice I didn’t say set resolutions.  I said “explore the possibilities.”  What happens next year has much more to do with what you think than what you resolve.  Your thinking will always over ride your resolutions if they are not aligned. Why not create new thoughts about the possibilities to come.

One thing I’ve learned is that when I hold too tightly to goals, not only do I have a hard time achieving them, but honestly, it’s no fun.

When I set my goals on possibilities, as Benjamin Zander says, “set the context and let life unfold” I receive much more than I originally planned.

As we wrap up 2014, spend some time this week thinking about the possibilities of 2015.  What possibilities do you see for yourself, your family, your career, your business?  Did that exercise make you smile or what?

Happy New Year, my friend!

Giving Up Should

Being your own boss is tough.  You’re harder on yourself than any boss you’d ever work for.  Don’t you agree?

To add to your plate, you need to take care of your family and you.  24 hours isn’t enough to get it all right.

I find myself saying, “I should have…” or “I should do…”  Do you have the same dialogue?

What Does Should Mean?

I looked up the definition of should online.

“Used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness, typically when criticizing someone’s actions: “he should have been careful”.

When you criticize your actions, you’re judging.  You’ve slapped a label on yourself, compared yourself to a standard and for most of you told yourselves how badly you’re doing.  Not a pretty picture.

What If You Changed Your Perspective?

What if you believed you were perfect just the way you are?  What if you loved rather than criticized yourself?

Love is the most powerful force on this planet.  When you open your heart to love, negativity evaporates.  Love is like the small light at the end of the tunnel drawing you toward it.

Business and Love

Some say business and love don’t mix.

I believe the definition of a successful business is when the functions of business are combined with love, respect, authenticity, and open communication.

Life and Love

In the same way, I believe a fully realized life is when you love yourself.

How do you know if you love yourself?  Your default isn’t to criticize.  You accept yourself exactly where you are.  You don’t feel the need to change yourself to fit an accepted pattern.

When you start to live consciously in love every day, miracles happen.  You are grateful for all that’s in your life.  You feel alive in the moment.

Sounds like a pretty good way to live and run a business doesn’t it.

No More Should

If you find yourself using the words should, have to, want, change them to I am, I choose to, I desire.  These baby steps will move from criticizing and judging to loving and accepting.

Are you ready to give up should?

Seeds of Wisdom

Life Simplified - Seeds of Wisdom

…become aware that you already posses all the inner wisdom, strength, and creativity needed to make your dreams come true. – Sarah Ban Breathnach

A Packet Of Seeds

I was a t the local garden center the other day and they had tons of seeds and bulbs.  I got all excited and bought some herb seeds.  Spring is on it’s way.

When I got home, I dug out my planters from last year, filled them with potting soil, sprinkled the seeds over top and watered them.

Then I walked away.

Seeds Are So Smart

I didn’t go back and push and prod the seeds to grow faster.  I didn’t dig them up and put them in “better” soil.  Nope.  Just let them do their thing.  They’ve got it all figured out.

It’s the same with us.  You have all you need to achieve your dreams within you.

Don’t Wait for Change…Create Change

Cliche, I know, but true.  That’s what Sarah is reminding us of today.  Instead of waiting for some external force to create change, why not choose to change in the direction of your dreams.

Many people come to me when they are in transition caused by an outside source.  They are scared and confused.  The work we do together allows them to tap into the wealth of knowledge they have within.  They tap into those seed dreams and start to water them.  With time a patience they sprout new leaves and branches they never knew they had before.

It’s scary to admit to yourself that you have the power to make whatever you desire come to pass.  As Sarah talks about today, you can become complacent and let external forces create the change in your life or you can take back the reins and drive your life.

I’ve come to choose the later.  How about you?

Playing Hide and Seek With Your Dreams

Playing Hide and Seek With Your Dreams | Life Simplified

Most of us go through life a little afraid, a little nervous, a little excited. We are like children playing hide and seek, wanting to be found, yet hoping we won’t be, biting our nails with anticipation. We worry when opportunity approaches a little too closely, and hide deeper in the shadows when fear overcomes us. This is no way to go through life. ~ Deepak Chopra

Playing Hide and Seek

Remember playing hide and seek?  There were butterflies in your stomach as the person got closer to your hiding spot.  I always seemed to giggle uncontrollably the closer the person got.

No one ever picks a hiding spot too difficult for the seeker to find them.  Why?  There’s something about the anticipation of being found that makes the game fun.  Those that hide too well are never found.

Still Playing After All These Years

As an adult, are you still playing hide and seek?

Do you have an anxious feeling when you think about your dreams?  Does the conversation go something like, “I would love to be a writer (excitement, nervous, butterflies).  But I never have any time to write (hiding deeper in the shadows).”

That’s playing hide and seek.  You have passions that make you giddy.  Yet you don’t follow them. You hide.

Hiding From Yourself

The difference with adult hide and seek is that you’re not hiding from someone.  You’re hiding from yourself.  That ping of awareness that you want to be a writer or whatever is like when a child “accidentally” sticks their foot out from under the bed where they’re hiding.  It’s a clue saying I’m here.  Find me.

Remember being found in hide and seek?  There were lots of laughs, smiles and excitement to find the next person.

When you experience a clue of your inner hide and seek, tap it on the shoulder, call it out from hiding and explore the next adventure together.

Go Ahead.  Be Found.

You’ll feel a similar explosion of excitement as you did when you were found in hide and seek.  I’ll even bet you find yourself giggling a bit!

Life Is 24/7

Clara Shumann

I didn’t know much about Clara Shumann until I tripped across her Google cartoon celebrating her 193rd birthday.  Reading a bit about her life, reminded me of a quote by Wayne Dyer:

“Nothing is gained by making yourself small and insignificant other than to manifest small and insignificance in your life.”

Clara’s Life

Clara Wieck Shumann was an accomplished pianist and composer well before she marred her husband, famous composer Robert Shumann.  According to her story, she met Robert Shumann when she was only 8 and he 17.  He was so inspired by her playing, he discontinued his studies and took up music studying with Clara’s father.

Clara’s career was 61 years long.  During that time she had 8 children, published over 30 pieces of music and wrote 25 more that were found later, and played concerts.  If that wasn’t difficult enough, she had to commit her husband and son to an insane asylum, lost 3 children and raised several of her grandchildren.  She was also a bread winner in her family.

Phew! And you thought you had a busy day!

Her husband is quoted as saying:

“But to have children, and a husband who is always living in the realm of imagination, does not go together with composing. She cannot work at it regularly, and I am often disturbed to think how many profound ideas are lost because she cannot work them out.”

Life Is 24/7

We talk about our lives being 24/7.  Don’t you think that Clara’s life was pretty 24/7 back in the 1800’s?

You have so much to give the world, just like Clara.  Living small, convincing yourself you can’t do something or that you don’t have the time is wasting your talents.

Robert Shumann felt his wife had so much more to offer, and so do you.  Just like Clara you live with constraints.  Take a lesson from this wonderful woman and don’t let your passions completely fade away.  Hold on and make time for them throughout your life.

Ask yourself what you would do if you could, then give yourself permission to try.  You have no limits so fly!
