Where Has Time Gone?

Here we are at the end of January.  Last week I found myself wondering where the month went. It seems like yesterday we were ringing in the new year.  Suddenly spring is in reaching distance.

Are you like me, telling yourself you will start that new book, lose weight, learn to paint, next week, next month, this summer?

Start Today

Well my friends, it is time to start today.  This is that moment you promised yourself months ago to start something you’ve always wanted.  Pushing it off another week is telling yourself you aren’t worth it…and you are.

There will always be something more important on the front burner, but you don’t want to get to an age where you regret the things you never did.  If the year is moving so quickly, you must take advantage of this moment right now to begin the life you deserve.

Take The First Step

Spend a few quiet moments this week imaging such a life. Imagine what it is filled with. I love to journal.  If you do to, write all those things down.  Now look at your schedule and begin planning in the first step.  If you want to learn to paint, maybe this week you go to the library and get a book on painting or sign up for a class or even go and buy the paints. Then plan your next step. It doesn’t have to be big to move you in the right direction.

Soon you will notice that time expands to meet your needs. I promise.

What’s All The Stress About?

This week I wanted to go for a walk, hike or play in my garden as soon as the sun came out.  Can you relate?

What did I do instead? Worked.  As the hours ticked by, I kept promising myself I would take a break and got outside.  Instead I worked and worked and worked.  By the end of the day I has exhausted, not by the work by the stress.

Wayne Dyer put it so well went he talked about how stress doesn’t exist.  He would ask his students when he was teaching that he would pass anyone after the first day of class who could come to him with a bucket filled with stress.  It is an impossible task.

Yet, if you are like me, you have days where all you feel is stress.  You have to run the kids to a million different places, present a proposal to a new client or perhaps have to have a difficult conversation with an employee.  You find your heart beating faster.  Your hands sweating. All you feel like doing is running.  Sure signs of stress.

What you can do is recognize it in the moment.  Take a quick breather.  Close your eyes, not while driving of course, and realign yourself with what is really important.  Your kids, your clients, your employee.  Then proceed.  See if that reduces the stress you feel.

This week try this simple technique and let me know if you reduce your stress.

Sacred Space

My Sacred Space

Most mornings I journal.  What I write about isn’t as important as writing.

This morning I pondered why this daily ritual was so important.  The truth is, my journal is my sacred space.  When everything seems to be moving at the speed of light, I know each morning, there is a friend patiently waiting just to listen to me.

A sacred space is an oasis in your life where you can sit back and reflect without interruption.  It doesn’t matter whether it is a church, temple, or the ocean going there reminds you to slow down and listen to the wisdom of your inner voice.

I often crave time alone to decompress.  Just like you, I have whirlwind days.  After a 12-14 hour day I thankfully flop into my bed falling asleep after barely closing my eyes.  Alone time consists of driving from place to place.

When I don’t journal I feel out of sorts.  I get grumpy and frustrated.  Give me some peppermint tea and my journal in the quiet early morning hours and all becomes right with the world.

This week notice what sacred spaces you have created.  They don’t have to be traditional. Cooking sauce from a family recipe.  Reading a favorite novel.  Watching a fire glow in the fireplace.  It doesn’t matter where your sacred space is.  All that matters is you recognize the wonderful gift it brings into your life.

Waning Summer

My sister and I were talking on the phone the other day lamenting the end of summer.  It seemed to come as such a miracle to us here in New England this year, it is hard to see it pass.

A reader of my Monday Inspirations reminded me throughout the summer that “Vacation is a state of mind.” (Thanks Wayne!) It has been a mantra all summer long.

Now in the twilight of the season, I realize the quote above is also a subtle mantra I have been adopting this summer.

Getting Caught Up In Stuff

Summer allows us to shed what we don’t need.  We live out of beach bags.  We open the windows and simplify our homes.  The garden grows of its own accord.

As I put my fall calendar together, I find myself slipping away from the vacation mindset being replaced by “I’ll get through it.”  I am getting caught up in stuff again and it doesn’t feel as good as summer did.   A familiar stress seeps back into my life.  I feel my shoulders tighten as I add another to do to the ever expanding list.  I sit back and sigh.

I take a deep breath and then another.  I repeat “All I have is all I need and all I need I have in this moment.”  I grab a water and stroll through the garden marveling at all that has been provided for me.  Gratitude replaces the stress.

Summer is Gratitude for What Is

I’ve learned the vacation mindset isn’t just about getting away.  It is about letting go of the stressful stuff and giving thanks for all that is in your life.  It is looking beyond your four walls and seeing there is a beautiful world out there full of wonder, surprises and yes, everything you need.

If you feel your summer being cut short, take a moment and get back into the vacation mindset.  You have everything you need to be happy.  Take a moment and look around.

Meditation Anywhere

Meditation is refreshment,If we bump into each other at the gym, fair warning, I might be on the treadmill with my eyes closed so don’t laugh.

I know I am on the treadmill to get my heart pumping, I’ve found a different goal…meditation.

It sounds crazy, right?  Why would you meditate at the gym?

Let’s be honest, being on a treadmill isn’t the most stimulating mental activity so I began listening to audio books.  One stressful day, I decided to meditate, and my world shifted.

Treadmill time is my daily mini vacation.

Taking small breaks, helps you stay focused. They make you feel re-energized.  This week, try to take 15 minutes during the day and do something just for you.  Read a chapter in an inspiring book.  Have a quiet cup of tea somewhere beautiful.  Take a walk in nature.

Whatever you choose for your meditation vacation, do so with love.  Let go of the day for those few minutes.  You’ll come back a different person.

Happy Upcoming Valentine’s Day to You!

This Valentine’s Day, I want you to make a special effort to love yourself, and then others in your life. So often, especially women, you go through your Valentine’s Day checklist and think of everyone except yourself.

You make sure the kids have their Valentine’s for school. You make cookies for the family or a special meal. You buy your significant other something they love. By the end of it all, you are exhausted which makes it hard to see all the beautiful things they have done for you.

 Possibilities in the New Year

Here we are on the brink of another year.  I love to take this week and not just reflect on the previous year, but also explore the possibilities of the next.

Notice I didn’t say set resolutions.  I said “explore the possibilities.”  What happens next year has much more to do with what you think than what you resolve.  Your thinking will always over ride your resolutions if they are not aligned. Why not create new thoughts about the possibilities to come.

One thing I’ve learned is that when I hold too tightly to goals, not only do I have a hard time achieving them, but honestly, it’s no fun.

When I set my goals on possibilities, as Benjamin Zander says, “set the context and let life unfold” I receive much more than I originally planned.

As we wrap up 2014, spend some time this week thinking about the possibilities of 2015.  What possibilities do you see for yourself, your family, your career, your business?  Did that exercise make you smile or what?

An Inspiring Lunch

I lunch with a friend to catch up on stuff including our businesses.  I found myself talking about all I wanted to do in the future, and the obstacles holding me back.

My friend revealed he recently flipped his business model upside down.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because I realized in the next 5 years I want to retire.  I still want to work, but I also want to travel. My current business model wouldn’t let me do that as easily as I wanted.  I decided why wait.  Why not start to shift my focus now.  I’m reinvigorated, and busier than ever.”

Expect The Best Today

It’s easy to think about how great life will be someday.  I know you’ve said the same things as I have, “When I save enough…When I lose weight…When the kids are gone…”

What if you looked at what you want in the future and then started living it today? What if you changed your business plan, life plan, health plan, family plan?  How would that affect your life today?

If you expect wonderful things to happen in the future but not taking action now, you are wasting the moment.  If you expect wonderful things to happen now, joy enters.

Don’t Put Off Today

This week, I want you to listen to your thoughts.  Are you putting off something for the future?  Can you start working toward it now? Can you start to expect the best today rather than down the road?

That future you keep waiting for may never come.  Take advantage of this moment and expect wonderful things today.

Are You Creative?

Life Simplified: Do You Have An Imagination?

Diagnosis: No Creativity

When I was 12 years old, I thought I wasn’t creative. Although my mother told me everyone was creative, I figured she was just being nice.

My grandmother painted, created needlework patterns, drew,  and much more.  My mother sketched.  My younger sister made up cartoon people.  My creativity went as far as a stick figure.

I channeled my creativity toward math and science.  I spent hours copying whole sections of dinosaur books into a notebook or doing math problems while my sister drew.

My Imagination Run Wild

Fast forward 25 years or so.  I’m sitting in my coach’s office.  It’s my first visit so we’re getting to know each other.  She asks me what I like to do.  For the next 20 minutes (or more) I rattle off hundreds of things I love to do.  When she gave up taking notes, she said, “You are certainly creative.”

What happened in those 25ish years?  I discovered being creative didn’t need to look like what my mother, sister or grandmother were doing.  I learned what I loved and my creativity took root there.

What Do You Love?

Sadly, when I ask clients what they like, they stare at me for a few minutes and then say, “I don’t really know.  I’m so busy all the time I haven’t thought about it for a while.”

I’m giving you permission today to think about it.

Write down all the things you love.  Be gentle with yourself.  Start small.  Do you love your first cup of coffee in the morning?  Write it down.  Do you love taking a walk after work?  Write it down.  Do you love cooking a new recipe?  Write it down.

Don’t judge.  Just write.

Grab your coffee and start right now.  Jot down at least one thing you love  in the comments.  It will loosen you up.  Ready.  Go.
